He did his very best last season and even lost one of his races because of a ba where he ended second.

I agree with leaving out a climber this season. The rules leave the possibility for an exception for a reason, I just never thought the climbing field would be this bad.
In short, I would include Engeli instead of Popken.

I was surprised to see Skyler on this list. He may the best climber this season, but far from the best rider. Perhaps we can leave him out and add Engeli, McCracken or a second sprinter.

Oh boy, we really dont have anyone better... Just looked at the climbers. Where are all great climbers hiding???

The only one worth mentioning is Jacob Wieringh with 2 div 1 wins (including classic) plus Germany tour YC winner. and 3rd GC Perhaps thats better than 3 wins + 4 results? Not sure myself...
Coosemans was 1+2 in two classics but didnt do much else...

Childers - sprinter, nr 1 in points, ok
Kleven - cobbler, dominated cobbles, ok
Cornejo - hiller, ok
Popken - climber - is that the best climber? Dont we have one who won some classic or sth?
de Wijngaetr - TTer, lots of points, but only 2 wins... Why not Finn McCracken, WC ITT winner?
